She’s ReDI! From Eritrea to Munich: Mihret's Quest to Fulfill Her Nursing Vocation

Mihret Welday at ReDI School. Mihret is currently working for the LMU Hospital Großhadern.

Mihret, an Eritrean refugee, found her calling as a nursing assistant for three years in her homeland. Passionate about caregiving, she thrived in her role until political unrest forced her to flee to Munich a decade ago with her children. This life-changing move uprooted Mihret from her dream job and the country she called home.

Upon arriving in Germany, Mihret dreamed of continuing her nursing career. However, she faced significant obstacles: language barriers, unrecognized qualifications, and limited digital literacy hindered her progress. Moreover, as a single mother with no family support and no childcare options at the time, her primary focus had to be her children's education and well-being. The fear of never being able to work as a nurse again loomed large.

“ When I arrived in Germany, I knew that I wanted to continue my nursing work, but I had no idea how to go about it. Everything was new and my vocation suddenly seemed very far away”

In 2023, a ray of hope appeared when Mihret joined ReDI School in Munich. There, she embarked on a transformative journey, acquiring valuable digital skills that are critical in today's healthcare environment. Through ReDI's comprehensive training, Mihret learned to proficiently use important office tools, create documents, and track patient information efficiently.

Thanks to the Program "She's ReDI", supported by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, she also received essential job market training, learning how to craft a compelling CV and navigate the application process.

This training was pivotal for Mihret. It equipped her with the necessary tools, knowledge and confidence to pursue her career aspirations. In October 2023, Mihret's hard work and determination paid off when she started working as an assistant nurse at LMU Hospital Großhadern.

Reflecting on her experience, Mihret shared, "At the beginning of the course I had no knowledge about computers. I learned how to use a computer for my daily life and work. At work I can now record my tasks and document patients' information. I joined ReDI at the right time. Also, the childcare services were extremely helpful for me as a single mother."

Looking to the future, Mihret has even bigger dreams. She hopes to continue her studies, potentially through further education programs (Weiterbildung), to become a fully qualified nurse. Her journey is a powerful testament to the impact of education and digital empowerment, setting her firmly on the path to achieving her dreams in the healthcare profession in Germany.

Mihret wants to share a message of hope and resilience with the new comer: “If I have just one piece of advice to give, it's to not give up, to be resilient and motivated to achieve your goal. I sent dozens of applications, received rejections, but I never gave up. It's important to train yourself and learn as much as possible about the job market to increase your chances.”

Mihret's story is an inspiring example of resilience and renewal, highlighting how support and education can transform lives and open doors to new opportunities.
